The BBS & Warez Scene
Modems, message boards, ANSI art, and the communities that formed the modern hacker internet.
Dial-up BBS systems were the social hubs of early hackers. Sysops ran boards that hosted message threads, file libraries, text files (zines), and even early multiplayer games. Groups formed to trade knowledge, crack software protections, and release patches and trainers. A parallel creative movement, the demoscene, pushed graphics and sound on limited hardware, celebrating technical mastery for its own sake.
While parts of the scene crossed into copyright infringement, the BBS era also incubated security research, netiquette, and the first debates about digital rights and online identity.
