From Hacktivism to Bug Bounties
Public-interest intrusions, disclosure debates, and the rise of coordinated vulnerability programs.
As the web matured, political expression arrived in the form of hacktivism: intrusions and disruptions motivated by causes rather than profit. In parallel, security researchers pushed for responsible disclosure while corporations began formal bug bounty programs, paying for vulnerabilities instead of threatening legal action. This shifted incentives and helped professionalize a swath of the community.
Modern hacker history is diverse: from capture-the-flag competitions and open-source security tools to red/blue team exercises and global incident response. The culture continues to balance curiosity, ethics, and the consequences of powerful technology.
