Early Phone Phreaking
The roots of hacker culture in the era of analog telephony and tone signaling.
Before personal computers became mainstream, curiosity-driven explorers experimented with the global telephone network. Known as phone phreaks, they discovered how signaling tones controlled long-distance calls and built devices like the blue box to interact with switching systems. This era helped shape a do-it-yourself ethos and the idea that networks could be studied, repurposed, and sometimes subverted.
The phreaking scene influenced early computer hobbyists, spreading norms around information sharing, technical documentation, and community zines that would later appear across bulletin board systems (BBS).
