Masters of Deception: The New York Hacker Wars
The Masters of Deception (MOD) were a multi-ethnic group of New York-based hackers who became legendary for their deep knowledge of telephone networks. The group, with members like 'Phiber Optik,' 'Acid Phreak,' and 'Lord Micro,' represented a new generation of hackers from diverse urban backgrounds.
MOD's claim to fame was its rivalry with the older, more established hacker group, the Legion of Doom (LOD). This 'Great Hacker War,' fought across BBSs and the internet, involved digital skirmishes, doxxing, and arguments over hacking ethics. MOD positioned themselves as champions of true curiosity-driven hacking, in contrast to what they saw as LOD's elitism.
The group's activities escalated to wiretapping and redirecting phone lines, which attracted the attention of federal law enforcement. In 1992, several key members were arrested in a nationwide crackdown. The resulting court cases and media coverage sensationalized the group, cementing their place in hacker lore as rebellious anti-heroes of the digital underground.
