Alex Biryukov

Biryukov’s work matters because symmetric primitives and password storage are core defensive building blocks. Cryptanalysis of such systems makes security claims testable and improves the designs that practitioners rely on.

Alex Biryukov is a cryptographer and professor at the University of Luxembourg. His research interests include cryptanalysis and symmetric cryptography, areas concerned with both constructing and testing the primitives behind everyday security systems.

His work on password hashing is especially relevant to defensive engineering: password databases should use intentionally expensive, well-reviewed constructions rather than fast general-purpose hashes.

The IACR ePrint archive records research coauthored by Biryukov on memory-hard password hashing. Such work provides a research basis for comparing the costs imposed on legitimate systems and on offline password-cracking attempts.

Biryukov is included for contributions to the constructive and adversarial sides of modern cryptographic research.
