Arvid Damm

Damm’s patents and machines document a significant branch of early rotor-cipher engineering. His work helps explain that rotor cryptography developed through multiple independent inventors, rather than a single origin story.

Arvid Gerhard Damm was a Swedish engineer and inventor who developed several cipher-machine designs. His patent activity in the 1910s and 1920s included rotor and autokey mechanisms for machine encipherment.

Machine-cipher development

Damm’s work formed part of the early rotor-machine landscape. His company AB Cryptograph later provided a setting in which Boris Hagelin developed further machines, linking Damm’s designs to a major later commercial lineage.

Why it matters

The early rotor era shows how physical mechanisms, patents, communications constraints, and cryptanalysis all shaped security technologies long before software cryptography.

In memoriam

Damm died in 1928. His patents remain part of the documentary record of rotor-machine cryptography.
