Charles Babbage
Babbage’s designs separated calculation mechanisms from instructions and data in ways that informed later accounts of programmable machines. The designs are historical precursors, not working ancestors of every modern computer.
Charles Babbage proposed mechanical calculating engines to reduce errors in mathematical tables. His later Analytical Engine design included a store, a mill, and instructions expressed through punched cards.
From machinery to programs
Although the Analytical Engine was not completed in his lifetime, its design helped later historians and engineers explain key concepts of general-purpose computation.
In memoriam
Babbage died in 1871. Reconstructed portions of his Difference Engine demonstrate the precision of parts of his design.
