Chris Eagle
Chris Eagle is an American computer security researcher and educator known for decades of practical and academic work in software reverse engineering. He has taught in the Computer Science Department at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California; a 2008 DEF CON speaker biography describes him as Associate Chairman of that department, while his publisher's more recent author bio identifies him as Senior Lecturer of Computer Science at NPS. Neither source gives an exact start or end date for his tenure, and he does not currently appear on NPS's public faculty-listing pages.
Eagle is best known outside academia as the sole author of The IDA Pro Book: The Unofficial Guide to the World's Most Popular Disassembler (No Starch Press), published in a first edition in June 2008 and a revised second edition in 2011. For years it served as the standard reference for IDA Pro, the disassembler and interactive debugger central to binary reverse-engineering work. In 2020 he returned to the same territory with The Ghidra Book: The Definitive Guide, co-written with Kara Nance, covering the NSA's open-source Ghidra suite. Open Library's edition records also credit him as an author on the original 2004 first edition and the 2015 fourth edition of the long-running, multi-author reference Gray Hat Hacking: The Ethical Hacker's Handbook (he is not listed on the 2nd, 3rd, or 5th editions).
Under the GitHub handle "cseagle," Eagle built and released a series of practical reverse-engineering tools, including sk3wldbg, an IDA Pro debugger plugin backed by the Unicorn emulation engine; the earlier x86emu embedded emulator; collabREate, enabling multi-analyst collaborative reversing sessions inside IDA Pro; and blc, which integrates Ghidra's decompiler as an IDA Pro plugin. Note: the IDA Pro plugin "IDA Sploiter" is sometimes associated with Eagle in casual references, but it was in fact authored by a different researcher, Peter Kacherginsky (GitHub handle "iphelix"), and does not appear among Eagle's own repositories.
Eagle has a long history in competitive and organized hacking. DARPA's own promotional video for its 2016 Cyber Grand Challenge — the first all-machine hacking competition, held alongside DEF CON 24 — identifies him as a member of the event's Competition Framework Team, explaining the design's "consensus evaluation" mechanism; he also gave a related talk at ShmooCon 2017 on designing and executing the competition. Separately, at DEF CON 25 (2017) he appeared on a panel of long-running CTF organizers representing "DDTEK," the crew that ran the DEF CON CTF contest itself for several years, and he built or contributed IDA and infrastructure tooling used in later DEF CON CTF finals, including a loader for DARPA CGC binaries and tools for the 2017 finals' custom "cLEMENCy" architecture. He has also spoken at DEF CON on multiple other occasions, including DEF CON 14 (2006) and DEF CON 16 (2008, with Tim Vidas, on collaborative reversing with IDA Pro and collabREate). No dedicated Wikipedia article exists for him as of this writing, and his formal educational background could not be independently verified from available sources.
