David Brumley

Brumley's research explores how automation can make vulnerability analysis and defensive testing more scalable, an important bridge between academic program analysis and operational security engineering.

Research

David Brumley is a computer-security researcher and professor at Carnegie Mellon University. His work spans program analysis, software security, vulnerability discovery, and automated techniques for understanding how software behaves under adversarial input.

Automation

Brumley's research group has studied symbolic execution, binary analysis, and automated exploit-generation problems. These methods seek to make rigorous analysis more practical for complex software, while also clarifying the limits and risks of automation.

Technology transfer

He co-founded ForAllSecure, a company that applies automated testing approaches to software assurance. The company reflects a recurring theme in his work: moving research ideas from laboratory prototypes toward tools engineers can use.
