Dennis Ritchie
The interfaces, processes, and programming idioms created around Unix and C became basic infrastructure for security research, operating systems, networking, and defensive engineering.
Dennis Ritchie was a Bell Labs computer scientist who created the C programming language and co-developed Unix with Ken Thompson. The combination made operating-system ideas portable across hardware and established a durable model for systems programming.
Unix and C
Unix began at Bell Labs in 1969. Ritchie’s work on C made it practical to rewrite Unix in a high-level language while retaining the control needed for systems programming, helping the system travel far beyond its original machines.
In memoriam
Ritchie died in 2011. The operating systems, tools, and programming languages influenced by his work continue to underpin much of modern computing.
