Elias Levy (Aleph One)

Levy wrote a historic public explanation of stack-buffer-overflow exploitation, while his Bugtraq and SecurityFocus work shaped how vulnerability information circulated in the late 1990s.

Elias Levy, known online as Aleph One, is a security researcher associated with Phrack, Bugtraq, and SecurityFocus. He is recognized for a 1996 Phrack article, Smashing The Stack For Fun And Profit.

Exploit technique as public knowledge

The article explained stack-buffer-overflow mechanics and became a landmark educational document in exploit-development history. It is historical technical material that defenders use to understand vulnerable memory-safety assumptions and improve mitigations.

Disclosure culture

Levy also moderated Bugtraq for much of its formative period and co-founded SecurityFocus. These roles placed him near debates over public advisories, vendor response, and technical vulnerability-information sharing.
