Frederick P. Brooks Jr.
Brooks connected practice, management, and theory in software engineering. His writing remains influential because it framed the coordination costs and communication constraints that affect complex software—including security-critical systems.
Frederick P. Brooks Jr. was an American computer scientist whose work at IBM included leadership roles on the System/360 family and OS/360. He later founded the computer science department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Software engineering
Brooks drew lessons from OS/360 in The Mythical Man-Month, a collection of essays on the management and design of complex software projects. ACM SIGGRAPH notes his additional work in graphics, virtual reality, architecture, and design.
In memoriam
Brooks died in 2022. His work continues to be cited for its careful treatment of the social and technical limits of large software projects.
