Gerardo Richarte
Background
Gerardo Richarte, widely known in the security community by the handle "Gera," is an Argentine computer security researcher and exploit developer. According to a 2019 interview, he studied mathematics at the Universidad de Buenos Aires before moving into computer security work. He has described himself as having been dedicated to computer security research for well over a decade by the late 2000s, building a reputation as one of the most technically respected exploit writers to come out of Argentina's hacking scene.
Core Security Technologies
In 1996, Richarte co-founded Core Security Technologies together with longtime collaborator Emiliano Kargieman. The company, born in Argentina, grew into an internationally recognized information-security firm whose flagship product, CORE IMPACT, was among the first commercial automated penetration-testing platforms. Over roughly fourteen years at Core Security, Richarte held a series of technical roles — including Senior Security Consultant, Senior Security Software Engineer, and Reverse Engineer — before spending about seven years as an "Expert Exploit Writer," where he technically led the team responsible for developing exploits for CORE IMPACT. His duties there also included researching new exploitation techniques, mentoring other exploit developers, and teaching internal and external courses on assembly language and exploit writing. Core Security's client base reportedly came to include large technology companies and government agencies, and the firm was later acquired by Courion in 2015.
Publications and Conference Work
Richarte is a co-author, alongside Chris Anley, John Heasman, and Felix "FX" Lindner, of The Shellcoder's Handbook: Discovering and Exploiting Security Holes, a widely referenced technical book on vulnerability discovery and exploit development. He also authored and co-authored technical papers distributed through Core Security's research publications, including work on exploit-writing methodology and stack-smashing protection weaknesses. Richarte presented at major international security conferences, including BlackHat USA (where he spoke on "Modern Intrusion Practices" in 2003), CanSecWest, PacSec, and REcon, where in 2008 he presented on small reverse-engineering tools including a Python-based disassembly engine. He has also spoken at Argentina's Ekoparty conference, one of the leading security conferences in Latin America.
Later Career: Disarmista and Satellogic
After his long tenure at Core Security, Richarte co-founded Disarmista, a boutique engineering and reverse-engineering services firm. In 2010, he again partnered with Emiliano Kargieman to co-found Satellogic, an Argentine company that designs, builds, and operates small Earth-observation satellites. At Satellogic, Richarte has held senior technical and security leadership roles, described in company materials as including Chief Innovation Officer and Chief Information Security Officer. Satellogic grew substantially in the years that followed, going public via a special-purpose acquisition merger and, according to Argentine press coverage, reaching a valuation of roughly USD 1.4 billion by 2026.
Significance
Richarte's career spans two distinct chapters of Argentine technology history: the emergence in the 1990s of Argentine security researchers as globally respected exploit developers, and the later rise of Argentine deep-tech ventures in aerospace. His work at Core Security contributed directly to the tools and published literature that shaped how offensive security testing and exploit development were taught and practiced industry-wide, while his subsequent work at Satellogic reflects the migration of hacking-scene expertise into broader technology entrepreneurship.
