Harry Golombek

Golombek belongs in this archive for his documented wartime codebreaking service. His life also makes visible the overlap between the problem-solving communities of chess and cryptanalysis at Bletchley Park.

Harold “Harry” Golombek was a British chess player, author, and wartime codebreaker. His chess career was interrupted by the Second World War, when he was recruited to Bletchley Park.

Codebreaking service

Contemporary obituaries record that Golombek worked among the mathematical and chess-playing codebreakers at Bletchley Park, including service connected with Hut 8’s naval Enigma effort. The precise division of work was constrained for decades by official secrecy.

Chess and public writing

After the war, Golombek became a leading chess writer and held the chess correspondence at The Times for decades. He won the British championship three times and received international chess honors.

In memoriam

Golombek died in 1995. He is remembered for both public chess scholarship and wartime service.
