Irving John Good
Good’s wartime cryptanalytic work and later statistical research connect codebreaking, early computing, and probabilistic reasoning—fields that continue to inform security analysis.
Irving John “Jack” Good was a British mathematician and statistician who worked at Bletchley Park during the Second World War. He worked with Alan Turing and later with the Newmanry, where cryptanalysis and electronic computation became closely linked.
Statistics, computation, and security
After the war, Good worked in Manchester’s computing environment and built a long academic career in statistics. His work on frequency estimation and Bayesian reasoning became influential far beyond cryptanalysis.
In memoriam
Good died in 2009. His career is remembered for bringing mathematical depth to both wartime cryptanalysis and postwar computation.
