J. Presper Eckert
Eckert supplied decisive engineering leadership for ENIAC and later computer systems. His work illustrates how early computer history depended on practical electrical engineering as well as mathematical design.
J. Presper Eckert was an electrical engineer at the University of Pennsylvania’s Moore School and chief engineer for ENIAC. After the war, he and John Mauchly founded the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation and continued work that led toward UNIVAC systems.
Engineering early machines
ENIAC’s history includes technical design, institutional support, and programming labor. Eckert’s role was central to the engineering of the machine, but no single biography can represent the whole project.
In memoriam
Eckert died in 1995. The Smithsonian oral-history record retains his account of ENIAC’s development and operation.
