Joan Daemen
Daemen's designs became standards rather than proprietary black boxes: AES and SHA-3 are publicly specified, analysed cryptographic building blocks used throughout modern systems.
AES
Joan Daemen is a professor of digital security at Radboud University whose work focuses on the design and cryptanalysis of symmetric cryptography. With Vincent Rijmen, he designed Rijndael. NIST selected Rijndael as the Advanced Encryption Standard and published the resulting standard as FIPS 197 in 2001.
Hash functions
Daemen later co-designed Keccak, the basis of SHA-3. NIST selected Keccak in its public SHA-3 competition in 2012. His university profile lists AES, SHA-3 and sponge-based cryptography among his best-known work.
