Julian Assange

A teenage Australian hacker turned publisher, Julian Assange went from breaching military and telecom networks under the handle 'Mendax' to founding WikiLeaks and becoming the central, polarizing figure in a decades-long legal battle over the boundaries of journalism, national security, and personal accountability.

Julian Paul Assange was born on 3 July 1971 in Townsville, Queensland, Australia. He later studied programming, mathematics, and physics at Central Queensland University and the University of Melbourne without completing a degree. This entry covers Assange as an individual: his personal background and hacking career prior to WikiLeaks, and his personal legal history. For the institutional history of WikiLeaks, see the site's separate group entry on the organization.

Teenage Hacker: 'Mendax' and the International Subversives

Before he was a publisher, Assange was a hacker. Under the handle Mendax, he co-founded a small Melbourne-based hacking group called the International Subversives. Beginning around age 16, in the late 1980s, the group is documented — in journalist Suelette Dreyfus's 1997 book Underground, which Assange himself researched — as having penetrated systems including Nortel's internal network, the US Defense Data Network, and computers at the Australian National University.

Arrest and Prosecution (1991-1996)

In October 1991, Australian Federal Police raided Assange's home after tracing an intrusion into a Nortel terminal in Melbourne. In 1994 he was charged with 31 counts of telecommunications fraud and unauthorized computer access. In December 1996 he pleaded guilty to 24 charges under a plea arrangement and was sentenced to a fine and a good-behaviour bond, avoiding prison.

From Hacker to Publisher

In the years after his conviction, Assange worked in computer security and was involved in early cypherpunk discussions about cryptography and information freedom. In 2006 he founded WikiLeaks, serving as its public face and, from 2018, its formal publisher.

Sweden: Allegations, Never Resolved in Court

In August 2010, while in Sweden, Assange was accused by two women of sexual offenses. It is important to be precise about the case's status: Assange was never charged in a court of law, was never tried, and the allegations were never adjudicated on the merits. Swedish authorities discontinued the investigation in 2017, reopened part of it in May 2019, and dropped it definitively in November 2019, citing weakened evidence and expired statutes of limitations on some allegations. Because the matter was closed rather than resolved through trial, no court finding of guilt or innocence exists.

Ecuadorian Embassy and UK Arrest

Fearing extradition to the US, Assange breached UK bail conditions in June 2012 and took refuge in Ecuador's London embassy, which granted him diplomatic asylum in August 2012. He remained inside the embassy for almost seven years. Ecuador withdrew his asylum on 11 April 2019, and London's Metropolitan Police immediately arrested him inside the embassy.

US Indictment, Extradition Fight, and 2024 Plea Deal

The United States unsealed an indictment against Assange in 2019, later expanded to 18 counts, mostly under the Espionage Act. He was held at HM Prison Belmarsh from 2019 through a multi-year extradition battle. After more than five years in detention, Assange reached a plea agreement with US prosecutors; on 26 June 2024 he pleaded guilty in a US federal court in Saipan to one count of conspiracy to obtain and disclose classified national-defense information, was sentenced to time served, and returned to Australia a free man the same day.

Legacy

As an individual, Assange occupies a contested place in the history of hacking and journalism: a self-taught teenage intruder into military and telecom networks who was never imprisoned for that early conduct, and later a globally recognized publisher whose personal legal battles became inseparable from debates about whistleblowing, government secrecy, and press freedom.
