Juliana Mickwitz
Mickwitz’s career shows why language expertise is a security capability: it can determine whether intercepted material becomes interpretable intelligence.
Juliana Ernestine von Mickwitz was a multilingual linguist who escaped Soviet Russia and later Nazi-occupied Poland before reaching the United States. She worked for the War Department and, after the war, for the Army Security Agency and its successors.
Russian-language intelligence
NSA’s historical biography credits Mickwitz with advocating new ways to exploit language materials and with teaching students practical transcription and translation skills when Russian-language expertise was scarce.
In memoriam
Mickwitz died in 1976. Her work honors the linguistic specialists who transformed raw communications into meaningful analysis.
