Konrad Zuse
Zuse’s work is part of the independent, wartime-era development of programmable computing. His machines and programming concepts illuminate that computer history has several technical lineages.
Konrad Zuse built a sequence of electromechanical and electronic calculating machines in Germany. The Z3 used binary floating-point arithmetic and program control via punched film.
Programming ideas
His Plankalkül design anticipated features of higher-level programming languages, though it was not implemented at the time. His work is assessed within the constraints and disruptions of wartime Germany.
In memoriam
Zuse died in 1995. His work remains an important part of the international history of computing.
