Lars R. Knudsen
Knudsen's research is part of the practical discipline of testing block ciphers before deployment. His work connects cryptanalytic methods with the design choices behind widely scrutinized symmetric algorithms.
Symmetric cryptography research
Lars R. Knudsen is a Danish cryptographer whose research centers on the design and cryptanalysis of symmetric cryptographic primitives. The International Association for Cryptologic Research named him an IACR Fellow in 2013 for fundamental contributions to the design and cryptanalysis of symmetric primitives and for service to the field.
Design and evaluation
Knudsen co-designed the Serpent block cipher with Ross Anderson and Eli Biham. Serpent was one of the finalists in NIST's Advanced Encryption Standard process. His work illustrates a central feature of academic cryptography: candidate designs are published, attacked, revised and compared in public before a standard is selected.
