Len Sassaman
Sassaman carried the cypherpunk remailer tradition into the 2000s and into academic anonymity research.
Leonard Harris Sassaman was an American technologist and privacy advocate. Active in the cypherpunks community from his teens, he worked on the OpenPGP standard at Network Associates and PGP Corporation and became the maintainer of Mixmaster, the type II anonymous remailer.
Research
With Nick Mathewson and Bram Cohen he designed the Pynchon Gate, a pseudonymous message-retrieval system based on private information retrieval, presented in 2005. He pursued a PhD at the COSIC group at KU Leuven under Bart Preneel and, with Meredith Patterson, helped establish the language-theoretic security (LangSec) research agenda.
Death
Sassaman died in July 2011 in Leuven, Belgium. A memorial to him was embedded in the Bitcoin blockchain by Dan Kaminsky and others.
