Marian Rejewski
Rejewski’s work is a cornerstone of Enigma history. It demonstrates how mathematical modeling, captured materials, and operational traffic can be combined to recover the structure of a cipher system.
Marian Rejewski was a Polish mathematician working for Poland’s Cipher Bureau. In the early 1930s he reconstructed Enigma’s internal wiring and developed methods for recovering daily settings from intercepted German traffic.
International cryptanalytic legacy
Before the German invasion of Poland, the Cipher Bureau shared key Enigma knowledge and techniques with British and French counterparts. Those contributions informed later Allied work at Bletchley Park.
In memoriam
Rejewski died in 1980. His achievements are recognized as foundational to the Allied Enigma effort.
