Martin Roesch
Snort made signature-based network intrusion detection freely available and became the de facto standard rule language for the industry.
Martin Roesch is an American software engineer and entrepreneur. In December 1998 he released Snort, initially described as a lightweight packet sniffer and logger, which quickly grew into a full network intrusion detection system with a rule language for describing malicious traffic.
Sourcefire
In 2001 Roesch founded Sourcefire to commercialize Snort while keeping the engine open source. The company went public in 2007 and was acquired by Cisco in 2013 for about US$2.7 billion; Snort remains maintained by Cisco Talos.
Later work
Roesch has continued to work in network security, founding Netography in 2018.
