Matt Bishop

Bishop's research and teaching have helped explain why vulnerabilities arise and how technical and social countermeasures work. His textbook is a substantial reference for computer-security education.

Matt Bishop is a computer-security researcher and professor emeritus at the University of California, Davis. His research addresses vulnerabilities and countermeasures, data sanitization, election systems, formal modeling, policy, and insider threats.

Teaching security

Bishop has made security education a visible part of his work. His book Computer Security: Art and Science presents principles alongside the practical reasoning needed to understand attacks, vulnerabilities, and defenses.

Laboratory work

At UC Davis, Bishop co-directed the Computer Security Laboratory. The laboratory's history reflects a long-lived academic effort to connect vulnerability research, systems work, and security teaching.
