Peter G. Neumann

Neumann connected technical security, reliability, safety, and public policy over decades. His work on Multics, high-assurance systems, and the RISKS Forum made computer-related risk a sustained community conversation.

Peter G. Neumann is a computer scientist at SRI International whose work spans system security, reliability, survivability, safety, and public policy. Before joining SRI's Computer Science Laboratory in 1971, he worked at Bell Labs and participated in the Multics effort.

Making risk discussable

Since 1985, Neumann has moderated the ACM RISKS Forum, an enduring forum for reports and analysis of failures and misuse involving computer systems. His 1995 book Computer-Related Risks brought many of these concerns together for a wider technical audience.

Security as a systems property

Neumann stresses that security is inseparable from dependability, human factors, safety, and governance. That systems view has influenced high-assurance computing and public discussion of voting technology, cryptography policy, and critical infrastructure.
