Vincent Rijmen
Rijmen's AES work supplied a widely deployed, openly reviewed encryption primitive. Its standardization shows how public cryptanalysis and interoperability requirements shape security infrastructure.
Rijndael and the AES process
Vincent Rijmen is a cryptographer associated with KU Leuven and co-designer, with Joan Daemen, of the Rijndael block cipher. Rijndael was submitted to NIST's open AES process and selected for standardization; FIPS 197 specifies AES using the Rijndael algorithm.
Academic work
Rijmen completed a dissertation on cryptanalysis and the design of iterated block ciphers at KU Leuven. His research has included symmetric cryptography, block-cipher design and hash functions. The IEEE Milestone site for Rijndael records the cipher's selection as AES and identifies Rijmen as a KU Leuven professor of symmetric cryptography.
