Vinod Vaikuntanathan

Vaikuntanathan's research studies how data can remain protected while it is processed. That problem is central to privacy-preserving computing and to cryptographic approaches built on lattice assumptions.

Vinod Vaikuntanathan is a professor in MIT EECS and a principal investigator at MIT CSAIL. His work is in the foundations of cryptography and its applications.

Encrypted computation

MIT describes his research as including fully homomorphic encryption, which enables certain computations over encrypted data, and lattice-based cryptography, an important area for post-quantum research.

Academic work

Vaikuntanathan received his Ph.D. from MIT in 2009 and joined the MIT EECS faculty in 2013 after research and faculty appointments elsewhere.

Security context

His work helps frame how cryptographic systems can protect data not only in storage or transit but also during computation, while retaining rigorous security assumptions.
