William R. Cheswick

Cheswick’s practical research on gateways, firewalls, and network visibility helped define early Internet-defense practice.

William R. Cheswick, often known as Bill or Ches, is a network-security researcher. His work at Bell Laboratories included early firewall and secure-gateway research; with Steven Bellovin, he co-authored Firewalls and Internet Security.

From gateways to visibility

Cheswick’s 1990 secure-gateway paper described an application-level architecture for protecting an internal network while offering controlled services. His later work also contributed to Internet mapping and to public discussion of usable operational security.
