Zach Lanier

Zach Lanier (handle @quine) is an application, mobile, and embedded-systems security researcher who co-authored the Android Hacker's Handbook and presented widely on Android permissions, IoT device flaws, and embedded-hardware reversing while working at Veracode, Intrepidus Group, Accuvant LABS, Duo Security, and Cylance.

Zach Lanier, known online by the handle @quine, is a security researcher whose public work spans application, network, mobile, and embedded-device security. According to his own conference biographies, he describes himself as "an old net/web/app pen tester type" who began researching mobile and embedded device security around 2009.

Career

Across speaker bios collected from Black Hat and DEF CON archives, Lanier's documented career path runs through several well-known security firms: he was a Security Researcher at Veracode, then a Principal Consultant at Intrepidus Group, before becoming a Senior Research Consultant / Senior Research Scientist at Accuvant LABS (documented in 2013). By August 2014 his conference bios list him as a Senior Security Researcher at Duo Security. A Summercon 2015 bio unusually lists him again as "Senior Research Scientist with Accuvant Labs," describing Duo Security as a prior role — a discrepancy that could reflect either a brief return to Accuvant or simply a stale/reused bio submitted to organizers; this detail should be treated as unconfirmed. By 2016, his Black Hat Asia bio lists him as Director of Research at Cylance. No verifiable source found in this research confirms he was ever directly employed by Cisco; Cisco acquired Duo Security in October 2018, after the period in which Lanier's bios place him at Duo.

Research and Talks

Lanier's research output, documented across multiple conference archives, includes a Black Hat USA 2012 talk with Andrew Reiter mapping the evolution of Android's permission system across API versions. At DEF CON 21 (2013), he and Todd Manning presented on reverse-engineering the GoPro Hero 3 camera as an embedded platform, examining its hardware and software attack surface. In 2014 he partnered with Mark Stanislav (then Security Evangelist at Duo Security) on a run of Internet-of-Things security talks — at BSidesSF, in a Black Hat USA embedded-devices roundtable with Don Bailey, and at DEF CON 22 with "The Internet of Fails" — which discussed the BuildItSecure.ly initiative aimed at helping smaller IoT vendors adopt coordinated vulnerability disclosure. Separately, with Kelly Lum ("Aloria"), he ran a recurring "DLP Security Bake-Off" series probing weaknesses in data-loss-prevention products, presented at Black Hat USA 2014, Summercon 2015, and Black Hat Asia 2016.

Publications

Lanier is a co-author of the Android Hacker's Handbook (Wiley, 2014), a technical reference on Android platform security co-written with Joshua J. Drake, Pau Oliva Fora, Collin Mulliner, Stephen A. Ridley, and Georg Wicherski.

Note: No standalone Wikipedia article or comprehensive independent biography was found for Zach Lanier during this research; the details above are drawn from conference-archive records (InfoconDB) of his own submitted speaker bios and talk abstracts. Personal details such as birth date are not publicly documented and are marked unknown here.
