TrueCrypt

TrueCrypt made full-disk and container encryption accessible to a large cross-platform audience. Its sudden end prompted public audits, archival work, and successor projects including VeraCrypt.

TrueCrypt was software for creating and maintaining encrypted storage volumes.

Operation

Its documentation describes on-the-fly encryption, in which data is encrypted before storage and decrypted in memory when read.

The project ended development in May 2014 and published a warning about potential unfixed security issues.

Aftermath

The discontinuation led users toward maintained alternatives and prompted further examination of the software and its successors.
